Charity Begins At Home

Charity begins at home

Throughout my money making experiment I am trying to see how much money I can make starting from nothing. I have always wanted to give to charity but never felt that I could really afford to because you never know when you might find yourself in financial difficulties. This is especially poignant during this credit crunch crisis at the moment.

However as I am making money from nothing, I felt that it would be very appropriate to give some of that money to help improve the lives of others. I got this idea from reading the book The One Minute Millionaire (see right – I thoroughly recommend this book). The authors write about how important it is to give something back to society while you are on your way to achieving your own financial goals. They state that this will enable you to become an ”enlightened millionaire” because if you are in the mindset of giving away a proportion of the money that you earn, you in a better state of mind to receive the riches that you are aiming for (I know, a little bit new agey but I like it).

I suppose this could be seen as assuaging your guilt while you try to build up your own bank balance. But even if that is so, at least others are still benefiting in a positive way from your actions

So I have decided to give, as the book suggests, 10% of my online earnings to charity. This will commence as soon as I reach my first goal of £1,000. The charities I have chosen are Save The Children and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Save The Children is a an international charity that works to improve the lives of children all over the world. This includes trying to improve the health and economic situation of children and their families as well as campaigning to get legislation changed to improve living conditions for children.

I have chosen this charity because as Whitney Houston sang “children are our future”. This charity shows what can be done to help with as little a donation as £1.00.
Visit Save The Children for more information.

Macmillian Cancer Support provides practical, medical, emotional and financial support to people affected by cancer, not just those who are ill, but also their families. They arrange for nurses or other health care professionals to attend to patients, they provide some people with a taxi service to and from hospital and also give some families the chance to have some time off from caring for their ill family member by offering short term home help.

This organisation relies on their supporters for 99% of their income which is generated through fundraising events, corporate sponsors, direct marketing and generous donations that people leave to them in their wills.

The reason I chose this charity is because I know two people who suffered from cancer and so this feels very personal to me. Also these people do a fantastic job in supporting all those people that are affected by cancer.
